General Description:
The Bearcat BCD396T digital portable is Uniden’s state-of-the-art, top-of-the-line handheld scanner. There are so many reasons that we love this powerhouse portable but we’ll start with the most obvious: it’s size. This scanner will fit in your shirt pocket without a problem. It’s totally unique in the industry when it comes to the package of size, price, features and performance.

Another obvious, and terrific, feature of this scanner: it’s display. The incredible full-graphics multi-line display shows more information on a portable than we believe has ever been shown before including 16 character frequency or talkgroup description as well as a name for the System and Group that the frequency/talkgroup falls within. For example you can have displayed:

Boston Police
CH-9 DETECTIVES

You can also see frequency, sub-audible tone, talkgroup ID, signal strength, batter level, and much more. The backlighting is a cool blue, also unique for a scanner.

And now for some of the less-obvious features of the 396. The radio runs on three AA batteries. In the box you get three rechargeables that will run from 8 to 10 hours on average, depending on a variety of factors such as audio level and the amount of digital transmissions (which can decrease run-time some). You also get an AC adapter of course that you use to run the scanner at home and also to re-charge the batteries in the radio. But if you’re ever in the field, out and about, and your rechargeables run down, no problem! Just pop in three regular alkaline AA’s and your ready to roll. It’s such a great change from the old days of having to use the proprietary battery packs.

The scanner has excellent audio. It also has a huge memory of 6,000 memory locations using Uniden’s Dynamic Memory Management technology (DMM). If you’ve never used a DMM scanner before (the 246 and many other Unidens now use this method), this will be a totally new scanner experience for you. With DMM you’re able to set up “Systems” instead of banks with practically any number of channels from 1 to 200+. And you can create a huge number of systems. You’re not limited to 10 or 20 Banks anymore. It provides tremendous flexibility but it also does take some getting used to. Once you do though many never want to go back to the old method.

Because the scanner has so much memory, is complex and it has so many attributes (such as 16 character alpha tags, different delay and alert settings per channel and the like), customers will find it extremely helpful to program the scanner with Butel ARC – Advanced Radio Control - Software. We offer both Basic and Pro software for the scanner, the primary difference being that the advanced software allows for activity logging and recording audio to your PC so you’ll need to have the scanner connected to the PC to take advantage of these features. With the Butel ARC software (either Basic or Pro) you’ll not only find it easier to program and manage the scanner, you also have the option of downloading data files from radioreference.com, the premier scanner frequency/trunking site, so you can much more easily program your scanner for your local area. This requires a subscription to radioreference.com which is available directly from that site. Check out the Butel software available on CD-ROM or by direct download from our web site for further details.

Another outstanding feature that’s not only incredibly valuable but also lots of fun is Close Call. Close Call checks for any line-of-sight transmissions in your immediate area. So if you’re at a ballgame, or you come up to the scene of an accident, or you just enter a town center where you’re not familiar with the local frequencies, just put Close Call on and the scanner will find any analog or APCO-25 digital transmission that’s taking place in your line of sight or within 500 to 1000 feet or so of you (and at much greater distances, perhaps up to ½ mile for powerful or tower-based transmitters such as a police base transmitter or even taxi company transmitter). You can put the scanner into either Close Call only mode or scan normally with a Close Call check every few seconds.

Because the scanner has so much more capability than we can describe here, we recommend that if you’d like further information you can check out the owner’s manual as well as the link to Mark’s scanner pages, both of which provide further details. But suffice it to say that this scanner is one of our best sellers even with it being the most expensive portable scanner Uniden has ever produced.

For portable scanning operation in digital areas, or mixed digital-analog or even all analog (conventional) areas, the 396 is simply a great choice.
