Portable Scanners

Portable police scanners, also known as handheld scanners, can be used in the home, in the car, or walking around town. Portable scanners run on batteries (and many models come with, or can be used with, re-chargeable batteries), but the radios can also be run off of wall-power with an included AC adapter. Newer models come with a USB cable, and no wall adapter (available separately), but it's the same USB power adapter that works with the Apple iPhone and similar devices. You can charge and program these scanners from a PC as well.

Portable police scanners generally receive just as well as base models. The low-end handheld scanners (priced around $100) do not offer trunking or digital capabilities, which you may need in your area. Another class of portables, called pre-programmed or HomePatrol scanners, can be used right out of the box, but we also recommend that you consider having us perform our Setup and Optimize service to insure that the latest database and operating system are in the radio and we will program a Favorites List for you of targeted frequencies specific to your home area.

Explore the models above for in-depth portable police scanner details and product reviews and if you are unsure whether a low-end basic police scanner or a high-end digital scanner radio model is required for where you live, fill out the quick simple form for choosing the right scanner, and we'll be glad to help! Frequently Asked Questions About Portable Scanners

Q: What is the difference between a portable scanner and a base scanner?

A: Portable scanners are handheld units designed for listening on the go, while base scanners are larger desktop models intended for home or vehicle setups. Handheld scanners are ideal for travel, events, storm spotting, railfanning, and everyday portable use.

Q: Do I need a digital scanner in my area?

A: That depends on the radio systems used by your local agencies. Many police, fire, and EMS departments now use digital systems such as P25, while some areas still use analog communications. If you are unsure, Scanner Master can help you choose the right model for your location.

Q: Are portable scanners difficult to program?

A: Many modern handheld scanners are much easier to set up than older models. Some include nationwide databases, zip code setup, or software-assisted programming to help you get started quickly. Scanner Master also offers expert programming services for many models.

Q: Can portable scanners receive more than just police and fire communications?

A: Yes. Many portable scanners can also monitor aviation, railroad, marine, weather, amateur radio, racing, and other local radio activity depending on the model and frequencies available in your area.
