Scanners for Beginners
Scanners can be a source of comfort, security and entertainment for enthusiasts of all ages. Scanners monitor local police and fire departments and can help you stay informed about storms, fires and terror emergencies in your neighborhood (such as we experienced recently here in the Boston area). Even if you have never used a scanner before, you can help keep your family safe with one of these great "beginner" scanners!
Listed below are some basic model scanners for beginners. The first two shown will only work in those areas where the public safety radio systems are what are known as basic "conventional analog" systems. One is a portable which runs on batteries and is great for use in the house or when out and about. Because it is portable and runs on batteries it is a great choice if you want a scanner when the power goes out. The other radio is a desktop and requires AC power but is a nice choice if you want something for your night table, office or family room and it has a weather alert feature, too.
Note though that police and fire departments in many areas of the country use advanced radio systems known as trunking and digital systems. If you live in one of these areas a basic scanner, such as the first two models, will not work. The third model, the Uniden HomePatrol, will work in most areas. While it is more expensive, it is by far the easiest to use. There are other scanners as well but these are great starter choices.
