Base/Mobile police scanners comprise both Desktop Scanners, which are used at your home or office as they are large and operate on AC power only; and, Base/Mobile Scanners, which can be used at either at a fixed location or in a car or truck as they are smaller and run on both AC and DC power. The Uniden BC365CRS, the Uniden BC355N and the Whistler WS1025 are all desktop scanners. All other Uniden-Bearcat and Whistler scanner models above are base/mobile designs that can be used and mounted at home or in a car or truck as all operate at 12 volts and most are supplied with both AC adapters for home use and mobile power cords for vehicular use. The pre-programmed Uniden HomePatrol I and II are hybrids that can be used as a base/mobile or a portable scanner. HomePatrols are also the easiest radios to use and are the best bet for someone who just wants to turn their scanner on, enter a zip code region one time to auto load frequencies, and start scanning away. The HomePatrols can operate under GPS control for an amazing mobile scanning experience (optional GPS receiver required). These radios run the gamut from the basic "analog" models to the most expensive digital scanners which are needed in many areas of the country where the police and fire services are using the latest digital two-way radios for communications. To learn which type of scanner radio you need fill out the quick simple form for choosing the right scanner, and we'll be glad to help!

Q: What is a base/mobile police scanner?

A:
A base/mobile scanner is a radio scanner designed for use at home, in an office, or installed in a vehicle. These scanners typically offer stronger reception, larger displays, and more powerful speakers than handheld models, making them ideal for monitoring police, fire, EMS, aviation, railroad, and other radio communications.

Q: What’s the difference between analog and digital scanners?

A:
Analog scanners receive traditional radio transmissions, while digital scanners can monitor newer public safety communication systems that use digital technology such as P25 Phase I and Phase II. If your local agencies use digital or trunked radio systems, you’ll need a digital-capable scanner to hear those communications.

Q: Can I use a base/mobile scanner in my vehicle?

A:
Yes. Many base/mobile scanners are designed for both desktop and vehicle installation. They can be powered in a car, truck, or RV and paired with an external antenna for improved reception while traveling or monitoring on the road.

Q: Do I need programming to use my scanner?

A:
Most modern scanners require some level of programming to load local frequencies and radio systems. Scanner Master offers optional programming services on many models, helping customers get set up quickly and avoid the frustration of manual programming.
