Basics

This amplifier is designed for use between the antenna and a receiver/scanner. It utilizes a low noise high level modern active device which provides optimum amplification of weak signals in a very wide frequency range from low VHF bands up to 2.6 GHz . The gain is about 16 dB, enough to compensate the coaxial cable loss between the LNA and the receiver.

LNA-502600 Consists of:
- outdoor LNA in a weatherproof box
- indoor unit
- power supply (DC wall adapter)

 Model - LNA-502600

 Useable Frequency Range
 30 to 2600 MHz
 Gain 16 dB Typ.
 Noise Figure
 1.7 dB Typ.
 Notch Filter Frequency Range Apporx.
 50 to 200 MHz
 Input Connector
 N Female
 Output Connector
 N Female
 Input/Output Impedance
 50 Ohms
 Power Supply Voltage Range
 20 to 24 V DC
 Power Consumption
 Max. 100 mA

The indoor unit serves several functions.

1. ON/OFF switching and providing DC power to the outdoor LNA via the coaxial cable. The same cable is used for DC power as for the signal from LNA to the receiver. Hence no extra power cable is necessary.

2. Remote control of the NOTCH FILTER. The notch filter is useful when a strong local signal in the VHF range causes overloading of the receiver front end. Such overloading is mostly caused by VHF broadcast signals or by pager transmitters in the high VHF range. The notch filter can selectively attenuate (notch out) such an individual interfering signal and restore the receiver's sensitivity. The notch filter has a wide range of approx. 80 MHz (corresponding to the anti clockwise stop of the control) to approx. 200 MHz (in the clockwise stop of the notch filter control).

3. GAIN control of the LNA, where minimum gain corresponds to the anti clockwise stop of the control and maximum gain to the clockwise stop of the gain control. Under normal conditions the GAIN control should be set to the maximum, where the LNA has a gain of typically 16 dB. In case of an overloading of the receiver/scanner front end the gain can be lowered from 16 dB down to about 2 dB. This control can effectively reduce or eliminate intermodulation resulting from strong signals at the input of a receiver/scanner. It should be used to set the optimal gain that will eliminate the intermodulation.

INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS

The LNA is designed for permanent outdoor use provided it is installed with the connectors facing down. Install the LNA to the mast below or near the antenna. A plastic strap is provided which can fix the LNA metal plate to the mast. A short lenght of a low loss 50 ohm coaxial cable (3 to 7 feet max./1 to 2m max.) should be used from the antenna to the LNA input connector marked ANT. Any length of a 50 ohm coaxial cable can be used between the N connector marked RX and the indoor unit input marked LNA. For short lenghts a thin coaxial cable such as RG58 will do, but for longer runs of cable (typ. over 50 feet) a low loss cable is recommended. Both input and output cables should be first led downwards from the LNA and fixed to the mast so that they do not pull on the LNA and so that rain water will drip down.

Bring the coaxial cable from the LNA to the indoor unit located indoors near the receiver. As protection against static and lightning use proper grounding of the cable before it enters the house if the LNA is installed on high masts or buildings. Plug the coaxial cable from the LNA to the N connector marked LNA on the rear panel of the indoor unit. If a thick or heavy non flexible coaxial cable is used it is recommended to terminate such a cable on the static protective device going from outside through the house window or wall and use a short length of a thinner flexible cable going to the indoor unit. Another short length of a thinner flexible cable should be used between the connector marked RX on the indoor unit.and the receiver input.

Plug the DC cable from the supplied wall 24V DC adapter to the power connector on the right side of the rear panel of the indoor unit. If another power supply is used observe the polarity (inner conductor is + and outer is -). Voltage must be in the range of 20V up to max. 24 V. Damage of the LNA can occur in case of higher voltage! (The LNA will work with voltages down to about 12 V with degraded performance and much lower notch filter range.)

When all connections are done, plug the power supply to the wall mains outlet and switch the POWER switch to the ON position to turn it on. LED on the front panel will light and the LNA will be ready for use.
