Pre-programmed scanners are a new class of scanner radios from the mainstays of the scanner business. The concept behind these new models was that they take most (but not all) of the complexity out of setting up and programming a scanner. They all use the RadioReference national frequency database and updates can be downloaded for free at anytime from this website into these models. The first pre-programmed scanners were the handy-sized RadioShack PRO-107 and then the nearly identical PSR-700, both manufactured by GRE. Both these scanners are analog only with trunking and cannot handle APCO-25 digital. In September of 2010 Uniden debuted their revolutionary HomePatrol radio. This is the first pre-programmed analog and digital trunking scanner and with its full-color touch screen and incredible GPS-control this model has become an instant smash hit. It's perfect for not only local use but especially for travel. The scanners still benefit from our Set-up & Optimize option. For very advanced local scanning with more user control, the standard base/mobile and portable models listed elsewhere offer a better choice.
