Description

Whether you’re traveling, or listening from home, no other single directory has ever provided so much professional, comprehensive detail on public safety and business radio communications.

MONITOR AMERICA is Scanner Master’s national communications guide. The book presents extremely detailed police, sheriff, fire, EMS, and public works reports on federal, state, county, metropolitan and intercity networks. Most major system reports include frequencies, exact frequency usage, PL/DPL tone codes, channel plans, talk groups, maps, codes, unit designators, as well as descriptions of agency function and E-9-1-1 center operations.

This third-edition of the book is a whopping 1120 pages in length, but at its 5.5” x 8.5” size, it remains a handy reference for the house, car, or briefcase while traveling. And now, for the first time, nearly every community in the nation is included in this single edition.

This guide is sold by the renowned Association of Public Safety Officials Institute (APCO), as it is widely considered the de facto national communications guide. The book’s editor, Richard Barnett, has spent over 11 years working with public safety officers, two-way system managers, as well as local hobbyists spread around the country, to achieve this level of acclaim. All these people, well over 200 in total for this edition, contributed their time and research to ensure the accuracy of this book.

What makes this book fun to read, not just refer to, is the background data on public safety systems, and the fascinating listings of interesting business licenses. There are Kellogg’s frequencies used in Battle Creek, Michigan, Alaskan dog-sled mushing frequencies; major park systems at Disney World and other large amusement parks; malls, sports and stadiums, news media, and more.

For using the book while traveling, we’ve included hundreds, if not thousands, of hotel security and operations frequencies around the U.S.. We’ve also covered the tower, ground, approach and departure control and all other aircraft frequencies for commercial airports around the nation. In addition, there are listings for aircraft ground crews, airport police and maintenance, plus Air Route Traffic Control Center en route frequencies. Major railroads around the U.S. have been included, as is the national marine radio channel plan.

Other interesting sections of note include: military aircraft; federal agencies such as FBI, DEA, Secret Service, and the like; national media operations; updated auto racing frequencies; phones; special events; basicshortwave radio, and more.

State sections include:
State Patrols (with maps, links, unit designators, codes, trunking plans and system explanations); DOT; Corrections; Emergency Management; Natural Resources; Fish & Game; Parks & Recreation; Colleges and Universities; National Forests, Parks, Monuments and Seashores; Bureau of Land Management; Ski Areas, and more.

Metro sections include:
Police, Sheriff, Fire, EMS, Public Works, and local government frequencies, tones, identifiers and codes for local, county, intercity and regional networks.

Metro sections also cover:
Reports of jurisdictions and city/county relationships; listings of E-9-1-1 operations (some states); Amusement Parks; Cultural Attractions; Airports; Railroads; Transit Systems; Sports and Stadiums; Hotels; Parks; REACT; News Media; Special Events.

New-Feature Highlights of the 3rd Edition

  • Listings for every city and town in the U.S.A. – and all in one handy book!
Almost every community in the nation is covered in this edition! That’s right, where the 2nd edition only covered the top 250 metropolitan areas of the U.S., our 3rd edition provides police, fire, local government and highway frequencies for every city and town. It’s a monumental undertaking, and a unique achievement for a single-volume scanner guide, particularly for its 5.5” x 8.5” size. But, we wanted to make this book handy to use, whether you were at home or on vacation anywhere in the United States.
  • Great new detail from public safety communications system managers Once again we’ve rung up a huge phone and fax bill as we worked with police, fire and EMS radio managers from across the nation, in order to bring you the most sophisticated presentation of frequencies and system detail as possible.
  • CTCSS/DCS (PL/DPL) Tone Codes
That’s right, we’ve included tone codes for many of the radio systems included in the new book. While tones are generally not a matter of public record, through both public safety contacts and dedicated hobbyists, we were able to include tones for a good percentage of the included frequencies.
  • AM/FM Radio
We included almost all the AM and FM radio stations across the country, along with their frequencies, call letters and formats.
  • Other important highlights of the new edition:
Repeater input frequencies for many of the non-standard (VHF) repeaterized systems; comprehensive racing section now lists race drivers and teams by circuit (IMSA, Winston Cup, NASCAR, SuperTruck, Toyota, Busch, Dirt, ASA, Southwest, Hydroplanes, etc.); new nationwide itinerant frequency listings for entertainers, conventions, associations, colleges, sports and more; national area-code and time-zone map with important travel-related 800-number listings; F.C.C. Allocation Table Summary.

This book was released in 1996. It was originally priced at $29.95 and is now on sale for $9.95. There are no plans at this time for a new edition.
