The Bearcat 898T is an outstanding base radio, actually the only scanner sold today that is truly base station size. The one feature it lacks is an alpha-numeric display, but with software you can see the corresponding alpha tag to a frequency or talkgroup on your PC (see ARC898). The lack of alpha is more than made up by the great price of the radio, $216.95. The jump to an alpha Uniden scanner is quite a step up at $529.95.
The radio is big and looks and feels like a true communications-grade receiver, such as an ICOM costing thousands. It has a great, easy-to-use, tuning knob that's wonderful to use to tune around looking for activity (or for tuning channels). We can't recommend this radio enough.
